Commissioning A Painting

Max - 12x12 acrylic on panelPeople often ask if I can create a painting from their photos and the answer is yes I can. Photos can be emailed to me or sent by post, or share them via facebook or another photo sharing site. Each portrait begins with a discussion of what you are looking for in the final painting. You might have a specific painting in mind or you might not have a clear idea yet of what you'd like. Either is fine.

Milly Many Coats a digital contemporary style painting of a greyhoundI'll look at your photos and we'll discuss what you have in mind. Then I'll do some quick sketches from those so that we can discuss ideas for the portrait in more detail. Your feedback is a big part of the process. If you didn't have any specific ideas for your painting then hopefully the sketches I send you will help you decide how you'd like the painting to look. If you had a specific pose in mind then the sketches I do will reflect your original ideas. Once you've seen the sketches you can decide if you want to go ahead and what type of painting you'd like.

Classic, Contemporary or Wet and Wild?

Which style suits you? Paintings in the classic style are more detailed, traditional paintings in oils or acrylics. They take a month or two or longer to paint. The contemporary paintings are more abstract and playful, a looser style of painting, less concerned with realism than with colour and shape and a lively personality. They take two or three weeks. Wet and wild watercolours are colourful, abstract and playful, the lighter version of the contemporary. With less detail and more splash they are faster to do and can take approx a week.

The Classic Painting

20x16 inch Oil painting on boardPaintings in the classic style are more detailed, traditional paintings in oils or acrylics. Oils take a lot longer than acrylics. I like to paint in layers and as oil paint takes longer to dry than acrylic paint, so an oil painting takes longer to complete, about 6-8 weeks is usual but with more complex pieces it can be several months. Acrylics dry a lot faster so a painting can be completed in approx 4 weeks. Oils and acrylic paintings can be painted on stretched canvas or board.
Stretched canvas
It's a gallery wrapped canvas with painted sides and the staples are on the back of the painting so the canvas can be hung on the wall framed or unframed.
Board or Panel
painting on a panelA painting on board is nice and rigid and a bit more robust than a painting on canvas which makes it ideal for shipping. Board paintings will need a frame. A panel has wood cradle on the back that supports the board, rather like a stretched canvas, so a panel painting can be hung framed or unframed.

The Contemporary Painting

Day Dreamer contemporary paintingA more abstract and playful style of painting, the Contemporary style is colourful and lively but less detailed than the Classic painting. Painted in mixed media using a variety of media including acrylics, inks, paint pens, and pastels and a range of techniques from light washes to thick impasto passages. It depends on the composition of the painting and what feels right while I'm painting. Painted on canvas, board or panel, or even aluminium panel for something very modern. I can also do them digitally. Time scales vary with the amount of work involved but approx two or three weeks.

Wet and Wild Watercolour Painting

Wet and Wild watercolour paintings are colourful, abstract and playful, the lighter version of the contemporary painting. With less detail and more splash they are faster to do and can take approx a week. Painted on watercolour paper using watercolour, inks and paint pens in a free flowing watercolour style, plenty of runs and drips and splashes. They are really water media paintings I guess. The size of the paper varies a little depending on the make, but we can decide between us what size will suit you before I start. I like textured paper that adds interest to the surface of the painting. It takes about a week to complete.
